Meet Our Summer 2022 Research Students

Chisom Enwere 

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons first year medical student, Chisom Enwere, has joined the Weinberg Family CP Center as part of the NIH Summer Research Program. This competitive program provides a stipend to support research. Chisom will be joining a collaborative project between Drs. Jason Carmel and Sunil Agrawal (RoAR Lab) to study the effects of spinal cord stimulation and robotic training in patients with impaired walking. Hailing from Houston, TX, Chisom received his Bachelor of Arts Degree at Cornell University prior to attending Columbia. “I hope to get a better understanding of the interplay between the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system to better the lives of my future patients.” says Chisom.

Tyler McCormick 

This summer, the WFCPC will host our first SPURS undergraduate student. The Summer Program for Undergraduate Rising Stars (SPURS) was created at Columbia University to create diversity of representation among future healthcare providers and investigative scientists. Since 2002, under-represented students have spent their summers in labs here at CUIMC. Tyler is neuroscience major at the University of Pennsylvania and will be joining Dr. Jason Carmel and Robert Carrera (RoAR Lab) to study the immediate effects of spinal cord stimulation and robotic training in patients with spinal cord injury. 
"While growing up, I’ve always had an interest in neuroscience because my older brother Marlon was born with Cerebral Palsy. My family and I spent time in hospitals throughout the US and Canada for surgeries and emergency procedures to keep my brother Marlon healthy which made me interested in the medical field. This summer, I am doing summer research with the Carmel lab under the Cerebral Palsy Center to determine if a career as a full-time researcher or research- physician is something I’d like to pursue. "
