Research
Childhood obesity represents a serious health threat for children and the next generation of adults involving cardiovascular, diabetes, and fatty liver co-morbidities among others. Current estimates identify 18.5% of all children 2 to 19yr of age with obesity and show limited potential for these children to outgrow this problem. Dr. Fennoy’s research seeks to understand the relationships between the factors that contribute to morbidity in pediatric obesity so that interventions may be targeted to both prevent and treat these conditions. This specifically applies to understanding the role of insulin resistance and its relationship to risk factors for cardiovascular morbidity in the developing child and the interventions and their timing that modulate the development of these comorbidities. Currently her efforts focus on:
1) the child/adolescent presenting with obesity with identification of when and how to intervene to limit progression to morbidity;
2) the adolescent with morbid obesity and the changes they experience in health post bariatric surgery including changes in bone health; and
3) disorders of increased body fat with low bone density such as Klinefelter syndrome.
